Collections allow you to create and re-use custom filters to efficiently narrow down on subsets of the data. Collections can update dynamically based on a test, or members can be selected manually.
Collection types
Classic collection - is a static list of dimension members or key members that are selected during collection creation. An Exclude option is available if you prefer to show data for members that are not in the collection.
Dynamic collection - is created by setting test criteria so that the collection updates automatically to include key members (e.g., customers) that meet the criteria each time you turn it on. This type of collection is available for key members but not dimension members.
- indicates a dynamic collection that has been created in Salient Dashboards. You can create, edit, and use this type of collection in dashboards.
- indicates a dynamic collection that has been created in SIM (i.e., Of These collection); you can turn on a SIM dynamic collection but you cannot edit it in Salient Dashboards.
Applying collections
A collection can be turned on as a filter in a column, widget, or across the entire dashboard (i.e., workspace filter) to narrow down on a particular subset of data. Users who have the necessary rights can apply, create, and manage collections. Dashboard Designers can turn off a collection's visibility for view mode to lock down content if they wish.
In addition, collections can be used as part of a custom group. A custom group can roll up results for a collection and compare it with other collections.
Global and private collections
Like other user data components, collections can be global or private.
Private collections are those you create yourself. They are stored in your user data and are not available to anyone else. You cannot save a dashboard globally (i.e. published) if it has a private collection. If you attempt to share a dashboard that uses a private collection, the collection will be converted to a regular (i.e., anonymous) filter so that end-users can access the same data.
Global collections are stored in user data categories. A global collection is a available to users who have access to its category. Therefore, global collections may be restricted by user account. In addition, collection categories may be restricted per dashboard. Only users with rights to create global user data can create or edit global collections.
Sharing collections between SIM and Salient Dashboards
SIM and Salient Dashboards can share classic collections if they are stored in the same location; therefore, global classic collections will be available in both applications (if installed) because they are stored on the server. A private classic collection in SIM will be available for the same user in Salient Dashboards if the SIM user data location is set to the server.
SIM dynamic collections will be available for use in Salient Dashboards if they are stored in a common location (i.e., global or same user for private). SIM dynamic collections cannot be edited in Salient Dashboards. Dynamic collections created in Salient Dashboards are not available in SIM.
